"For fear is nothing else but a surrender of the help which reason offers." — Wisdom 17:12
Fear is one of the most powerful emotions we experience. It can influence our thoughts, shape our decisions, and even determine the direction of our lives. While fear can sometimes alert us to real danger, it often does something much more harmful—it causes us to abandon the very wisdom and understanding that could help us overcome our circumstances.
Wisdom 17:12 presents a profound truth:
"For fear is nothing else but a surrender of the help which reason offers."
In other words, fear is what happens when we stop listening to reason, wisdom, and truth. Instead of relying on understanding, we become consumed by uncertainty, assumptions, and worst-case scenarios.
Imagine hearing an unexpected noise in the middle of the night. Reason suggests several possibilities: the wind, the house settling, or something harmless. Fear, however, immediately imagines the worst. When fear takes control, it pushes aside reason and magnifies the threat.
This principle extends far beyond momentary worries. Fear can cause us to question God's promises, doubt His faithfulness, and become overwhelmed by situations that are ultimately under His control. Rather than seeking wisdom, we become preoccupied with what might happen.
The danger of fear is not merely that it makes us uncomfortable—it blinds us to the help available to us. It causes us to overlook truth, ignore wisdom, and forget the lessons God has already taught us.
Reason, guided by God's wisdom, offers help. It reminds us of what is true. It examines circumstances honestly. It seeks understanding rather than panic. Most importantly, it points us back to the One who holds all things in His hands.
Fear says, "What if everything goes wrong?"
Wisdom asks, "What has God already said about this situation?"
Fear focuses on the problem.
Wisdom focuses on the truth.
Fear magnifies uncertainty.
Wisdom remembers God's faithfulness.
The next time fear begins to rise, pause and ask yourself: Am I surrendering the help that reason offers? Am I allowing fear to speak louder than truth?
God has not left us without help. He has given us His Word, His wisdom, and His Spirit to guide us. When we choose wisdom over fear, we find clarity. When we trust God's truth over our anxieties, we find peace.
Fear may present itself as protection, but often it is simply a surrender of the help already available to us through wisdom, understanding, and faith.
Choose wisdom. Choose truth. Choose peace.
