The Danger of Self-Centeredness
When a person becomes overly focused on their own appearance, abilities, accomplishments, or status, their attention is directed inward rather than upward. This deep-seated self-centeredness can create a barrier that prevents them from recognizing God and appreciating His presence in their lives.
Because their perspective is consumed by self, they often fail to see God's goodness revealed through His creation, His provision, and His daily acts of grace. An inflated sense of self-importance can blind a person to the reality that every good gift, talent, and opportunity ultimately comes from God.
As a result, true understanding of God's love, mercy, and grace becomes difficult. Knowledge about God may be acquired intellectually, but a genuine appreciation of His character often requires something more profound—an encounter with Him. When a person experiences the presence of God, they begin to see themselves through the lens of His greatness rather than their own. Pride gives way to humility, self-reliance gives way to dependence on God, and self-glorification gives way to worship.
It is often in these moments of divine encounter that a person truly comes to understand the depth of God's love, the abundance of His mercy, and the transformative power of His grace.
Final Thought:
The more consumed we are with ourselves, the less room we leave to see God. But when we humble ourselves before Him, our eyes are opened to His goodness, and we discover that His love, mercy, and grace are far greater than anything we could ever achieve on our own.
